With the roll out of vaccines increasing, the idea that things are getting back to normal is rapidly becoming a closer reality. Now is not the time to stick your head in sand but rather, it's the time to stop and think what this new reality will actually look like and what the changes will mean to your organization.

Any leader who isn’t completely delusional realizes that the days of 100% of our employees happily reporting to a physical location daily is pretty much a thing of the past. But what does a new work model look like and will it make sense for all concerned.

Before you start making changes here a few thoughts you may want to keep in mind:

  • Decide what working in the office (or not) is meant to accomplish. Now is the time for brilliant leaders to have a firm understanding of why the location of where certain jobs are performed is important. Leaders must be prepared to communicate the purpose and the benefits of a change and to help their followers to once again reimagine how the work gets done.

  • Ask role specific questions. Leaders should think through the reasons why a specific job is better performed either in the office or remotely. Spend time talking and listening to those who are currently performing the job and to those who are responsible for managing. Getting their input and encouraging honest feedback can often lead to more innovative ways to get the job done and more engagement.

  • Solicit personal reaction to a change. To open communication, brilliant leadersshould not be afraid to ask what level of comfort and connectivity their worker is feeling about working from home versus working in the office. Encourage your worker to tell you about their experience as a remote worker and to share their opinions on how changes will impact their future and the future of the organization.

  • Take personality and experience into account. Leadership is all about knowing the strengths and limitations of the people you lead. Recognizing that some people thrive working remotely, being on their own and others may need the camaraderie and support of being in an office is a part of the leader’s key to maintaining a successful workforce. Take time to get to know those you lead and where possible make changes that will help them to grow and to succeed.

While it is often said that being a leader is a lonely, stressful, and pressure packed place to be, it doesn’t have to be that way. For those great, brilliant leaders who approach the challenge of change with an open mind, leadership is a wonderful, exciting experience.
