Leadership: It's an Inside Job!

“If you can become the leader you desire to be on the inside, you will be able to become the leader you want to be on the outside.” ~John C. Maxwell

David sparked an effort to cut waste when he started a conversation with the cafeteria manager at his workplace about how food might be served without unnecessary containers or wrapping.

Susan worked a whole year to develop a program that would match colleagues from her workplace with local students in search of mentors.

William began a weekly virtual training class to help support his colleagues new to the experience of remote management.

Nobody is likely to write a book about David, Susan, or William or to hold parades to celebrate their achievements. Likely as not, these everyday “inside” leaders will never receive any acknowledgements or kudos for their efforts.

But make no mistake, these leaders are creating just as much impact in their workplace as the headline grabbers described on social media or in the daily news.

You know, too often, we believe that leadership is the domain of those with recognized authority and titles, but the reality is it takes average people just like us to make a difference in our workplace, in our communities, and in the world.

And as rapidly as things are changing, our world needs people like us. People who are willing to think differently about leadership and to remember that leading is not the exclusive domain of those in high places. When we act as though what we say and do matters, we are leading.

And it all starts on the inside!

Although leadership is inextricably connected to who we are, the inner qualities shared by great, brilliant leaders remains constant. Here are just a few:

  • Positive attitude. Great brilliant leaders know that the presence of a positive mindset builds a sense of security and confidence in those they lead.

  • Interest in others. Great, brilliant Leaders thrive on helping others achieve their goals. They are motivated by a desire to bring out the best in others and they work daily to make it a reality.

  • A drive for learning. Great brilliant leaders learn constantly. They learn from others, from opportunities, and from their own mistakes. They are driven by the deep belief that those who stop learning, stop growing.

While great brilliant leaders share many other inner qualities, they always remember that leadership is a privilege and with that privilege comes responsibility to strive to be the best they can be…inside and out.
